What do you do when you find yourself flip flopping on doubting?

i've never once ever considered that the jw's were right about anything, slight exaggeration but you know what i mean, until fairly recently.

i think i can see how people get attracted to the jw's.

i've posted here about my struggles with my wife, well things have gotten much worst as many of you seemed to indicate might happen.

What is your wife’s attitude towards you and why do you think she is unwilling to work? Do you think she wants a divorce? Or is it that she’s overwhelmed and has simply given up?

Yeah, she sounds like she has tuned out, with this comment from marriedtoaJW:

She seems inclined to let it all fall apart but doesn't say a word about it. I try to keep things civil in the home for the sake of our other small children but it's getting more and more difficult. She wont look for a job, not that there is much out there anyway, but you would think that if a woman loved her husband and say him doing so much to keep things going, she might want to step it up a little, if even for just awhile, but that's never been her way.

She's told me in a fit of anger a couple of weeks ago that I don't even know how done she is with me. My daughter heard her and cried herself to sleep that night. Have to fill you guys in later with more details...

Sounds quite likely that JW wife has decided, and is positioning for grounds for a scriptural divorce, claiming his failure to provide for the family.... So she gets cut loose from the marriage, but doesn't get DFed and hence gets to keep associating with her JW family.

What is this primitive notion of SELF-SACRIFICE?

    by Terry in

among jehovah's witnesses self-sacrifice is a price everybody is expected to pay.. members of this religious group are told they are being watched by the world as a public spectacle in an ancient roman coliseum.. all sorts of sacrifices must be transacted to convince jehovah of their sincerety and to titillate the worldly people with spectacular acts of faith.. .

jw's give up the best secular education and the highest-paying careers.

it is a sacrifice.. jw's have been urged to give up marriage and child-rearing to devote time to door to door evangelizing work.

Having to make a sacrificial burnt offering on a alter and not being able to eat a nicely cooked well roasted lamb

My understanding is the mostly-inedible parts (organs like kidneys, bones, fat, etc) were offered to God(s), but the priests did get a share of the best cuts of meat as payment for their altar-slaughtering services.

Think of it like a mandatory tax imposed by the State (where religion WAS part of the State control), where failure to comply meant not just personal sin, but a sin cast on the ENTIRE land and all of it's inhabitants. Given the principle of being forced to turn wrong-doers in or share in their sins, you have power inducement for everyone to play along with the mandatory sacrifice ritual....

    Terry said:

    Okay, I'll buy that.

When you are the last guy left there is nobody left to nay-say your version of things. He was sitting pretty sweet.

Given the tendency for tall tales to emerge, I look at the Masada account with an equally jaundiced eye as the OT (not that it matters, though: it's not like the account has any theological significance today).

But, Josephus is a vital voice to the history of the Jews and he made a suicide pact which he himself did NOT honor.

His spooky memory of who said and did what to whom is almost the only testimony in the latter days of Judaism to certain persons and events otherwise uncorroborated.

Setting aside the mythic elements of the account, their sacrifices of their lives would probably be long-forgotten and lost for all time, if not for the historian who understood that it would all be for nothing if he followed through with the pact; instead, he lived on as the story-teller.

What nitwit would heed such warnings?

It should be a red flag!!

In case you haven't noticed, there's no shortage of nit-wits? :)

Heck, when I was a kid, they similarly discouraged education, independent thought, maybe even moreso than today. And even though the internet has made it EASIER to research nowadays, the facts have been readily available to ANYONE who exerted even a slight amount of effort to go to a library. Few JWs availed themselves of that, as being seen in a library was viewed as verboten as emerging from a porn shop.

Think back: you once WERE such a nit-wit. Why didn't YOU see it then (and it's NOT about access to counter-evidence). There's the likely answer for why JWs still continue....

but after the age of fifty years he will retire from the service company and serve no longer.

and he must minister to his brothers in the tent of meeting in taking care of the obligation, but he must render no service.

And how exactly is she any different from any other R&F publisher, again? She contributes to the warm-body count: is that not enough? :)

Nah, that was in a time well before 50 became the new 30... You've GOT to consider cultural/historical context!

Imagine the silliness that would ensue if we tried to apply ancient standards to humans, 3,000 yrs later?
